1962 Citroën ID19

***Vendor supplied images***

Highlights

  • Just two previous keepers and in initial ownership for 44 years
  • Previously converted from LHS to LHM
  • Presented in very good condition with much of its originality intact

The Appeal

There has arguably never been a more technically innovative manufacturer than the Citroën, who pushed the boundaries of what other manufacturers thought possible when it came to the use of hydraulics. They were wholly unconventional in their styling too and their interiors in particular challenged all that came before.

Early examples of the DS and those sold under the ‘ID’ moniker are now rare and sought after machines, especially if you’re seeking an original example with well documented history.
Therefore we’re delighted to present this 1962 ID 19 which has only had two previous keepers. In initial ownership for 37 years in the hands of a vigneron from Trébes, this ID was then acquired by a local Citroën dealership who owned it for six years during which time they carried out some work and modifications.

Now in the hands of its third owner since 2005, it is time for this charming Citroën to find a new home, as the vendor is downsizing their collection. Converted to the superior LHM system and presented in wonderful condition with much of its originality intact, this ID 19 is not one you’ll want to miss out on, as seldom do we see such a fine example of this vintage.

The History and Paperwork

  • The first owner of 37 years was a vigneron in Trébes, France
  • A friend of the vendor recalls seeing the car around vineyards during their childhood
  • The second owner was a local Citroën dealership who carried out some work to the car over their six years of custodianship, including the aforementioned LHM conversion
  • In present ownership since 4th November 2005
  • Valid Contrôle Technique
  • Original ID 19 service schedule
  • Originally off-white, now a Chapron burgundy metallic
  • The vendor informs us that the indicated 90,390 kilometres is correct

The Interior

  • Red jersey upholstery in very good condition
  • Original headlining, dashboard and door trims
  • Replacement seats currently fitted
  • The original seats have been retained, although are in need of some restoration
  • Features an early style rear only parking switch
  • Original key ignition with push button start
This Citroën’s interior has been preserved rather than restored which we heartily approve of. While the original seats have been swapped out for replacement items, the originals have been kept and accompany the car should the next owner wish to restore and reuse them as they shall require new foam and cloth.
Otherwise, all is original and in very good condition with some attractive patina accrued over the car’s 61 years on the road. The dashboard is immensely smart, with the only damage being some cracks to the bezel that covers the steering column which was reportedly caused by exposure to the sun. We understand that all the instrumentation and switchgear functions correctly and we didn’t spot any signs of later modification.
The carpeting looks in good order, as does the original headlining and the door cars present well with a little wear and fading. All appears in order inside the boot, with no excessive wear to be found.

The Exterior

  • Repainted in Chapron burgundy metallic with a silver roof by the Citroën dealer who previously owned it
  • No overriders and stainless steel roof trim as per original ID late first series specification
  • We’re assured that there is no corrosion to the bodywork or underside
  • The aluminium bumpers have only light scratches which should polish out
This is the sort of car that attracts attention wherever it goes, as there’s really nothing else on the road quite like it. The retro-futurist styling is utterly fabulous and has gone down in history as a design classic. Many argue that the first series IDs are the purest of the DS style-wise, with no overriders or other later accoutrements to distract from its otherworldly lines.
This ID’s bodywork is in really nice condition and the vendor assures us that there’s no corrosion at all. The colour was changed while the car was owned by a Citroën dealership from an off-white to a Chapron burgundy metallic. The roof was painted silver, which complements the aluminium bumpers. The vendor points out two very minor dings, one of which isn’t even visible when photographed.

When resprayed, the roof was reinstalled with a new roof rubber, which is in excellent condition and as a result it Perspex rear window was also swapped out for a glass item at the same time as these other jobs.
The wheels all present well and are shod with the correct Michelin X radial tyres. The headlamps and lights are all in excellent condition and everything apparently works, including the rear only parking lights. The vendor points out that these early models also feature spares bulbs, housed in the rear lights - a nice touch we thought.

The Mechanics

  • 1.9-litre four cylinder engine driving the front wheels
  • Four-speed manual gearbox
  • Retains its original 12 volt system
  • Converted to use Citroën’s later LHM hydropneumatic system
  • Recently fitted with replacement spheres and a new battery
  • Reportedly running and driving without fault
Not only do the ID and DS not look like any other car, they’re quite different under the skin as well, with a hydropneumatic system taking care of several key functions.
This ID has been converted to use LHM in place of the hydroscopic synthetic oil it used from the factory, which is a complex yet worthwhile upgrade. Therefore the spheres and reservoirs under the bonnet are green, as found on later cars. The vendor has replaced the spheres recently and reports the whole system to be in good working border with the suspension rising and falling on demand.
The engine is said to run without fault and we understand it to be the original unit. The manual gearbox is original too and selects ratios smoothly. We’re informed the car is a joy to drive and the vendor says there are no issues.

Summary

In lovely condition with a great history, this Citroën ID is a fantastic example and we’re sure it shall continue to be appreciated to the extent it has all its life.
Supremely usable and eminently presentable, this is an opportunity you can’t afford to miss.
