The Appeal
There’s an allure to classic Land Rovers that’s sometimes quite hard to explain - but here goes…
They’re a vehicle that’s unashamedly fit for purpose, they’re authentic, with nothing you don’t need and not a hint of superfluous styling or indeed any creature comforts. The Land Rover’s form is wholly dictated by function and as a result, they’re undeniably rather elegant.
This 1966 Series IIA exemplifies what makes classic Land Rovers fun. In dainty short-wheelbase form and equipped with a canvas tilt, it looks the perfect vehicle for family outings or perhaps a spot of green laning. Previously restored to a very good standard and presented in fine condition both mechanically and cosmetically, this Land Rover is ready for its new custodian. During current ownership, the vendor has spent around £6,000 going through the mechanicals, including the fitment of a rebuilt 2.25-litre diesel engine.
Restored, with little in the way of wear to report throughout
No obvious signs of aftermarket additions
Limestone paintwork with matching wheels
Recent new tyres
Equipped with a removable canvas tilt with galvanised frame
Straight "Birmabright" alloy bodywork
The chassis and bulkhead appear in superb order
Limestone is one of our favourite colours for Series Land Rovers. Frankly, it's nice to see one that isn't green every once in a while!
As the photographs attest, everything appears to be in great condition. This is a particularly good-looking example with very few imperfections, especially for a vehicle of this age and nature. The underside is a particualr highlight; the chassis appears in fine order and impeccably clean for an off-roader. All looks similarly smart topside, too, with a nice paint finish and very straight alloy bodywork. The canvas tilt is our favourite feature, allowing you to have a convertible and, if you wish, even fold down the front screen!
The interior remains true to the car's utilitarian roots. Except for the seats, which are either reupholstered or entirely new, there’s not a soft furnishing in sight; even the dashboard is made of steel. There’s no radio or indeed any of the trappings of modern cars and that's why we love it. You get a steering wheel, pedals and an assortment of levers, which is actually all you need to make this thing go just about anywhere.
We understand that the instrumentation and switchgear works correctly, as does the Smiths round heater - (a recent invoice for which is included).
Freshly rebuilt 2.25-litre four-cylinder NA diesel engine
Four-speed manual gearbox with selectable low range and four-wheel drive
Freewheeling front hubs
New clutch
Auxiliary gauges added for water temperature and oil pressure
Reportedly runs and drives very well following extensive mechanical work
The vendor informs us that the Land Rover drives well, with no untoward noises or any faults to report. We understand that the gearbox operates smoothly along with the red and yellow levers that control the low range and four-wheel drive system. The Land Rover retains drum brakes all around, which we understand operate correctly.
Last but by no means least, the rebuilt and repainted 2.25-litre diesel engine presents exceedingly well under the bonnet, and we understand that it ticks over nicely.
