The Appeal
With its PVC hood stowed neatly away, there’s a nautical influence at play in the appearance of the Triumph Vitesse convertible. Adding six-cylinder power into a compact body for optimal performance and roadholding, this Herald-inspired car was sold throughout the 1960s, and its Michelotti-penned lines are just as arresting today as they were originally.
In the late 1960s, a two-litre six-cylinder engine would have earned a car’s owner bragging rights down the pub, as would a prominent Overdrive badge on the boot. Today, the burble of that iconic engine provides a stirring soundtrack to one of the last Mark 1 Vitesse models to roll off the Canley production line. Finished in British Racing Green, this car is presented to market with authentic Mark 1 features like lightly patinaed hubcaps alongside a period spare wheel and tyre change kit in the boot. Where modifications have been made – like the addition of Mazda MX-5 front seats – they’ve been sympathetically and discreetly incorporated. The recently replaced hood is a perfect example of this.
The current owner describes this car as “enjoyable”, adding that “a great six-cylinder engine coupled with the overdrive gives a very smooth drive.” Front seats and a contemporary CD player aside, the interior is a symphony of wooden inserts and chrome-ringed dials, with a three-spoke wood-and-metal steering wheel taking centre stage. There are loose cabin wires and wear on the gear lever and rear seat, while the emerald paintwork needs attention in places, yet this remains a well-preserved example of a highly sought-after classic.
