The Appeal

Facing pressure in its vital USA market for a V8 engine, Mercedes’ response was this car - the impeccable 280SE 3.5 coupe. The new engine featured overhead camshafts in place of American cars’ antiquated pushrods, so it was much smoother and the world’s first production V8 with advanced fuel injection. The six-cylinder W111 was both great to drive and beautiful - the 3.5L V8 was much, much better. No wonder enthusiasts seek out these rare cars.

The 3.5L car arrived in autumn 1969 with the lower, wider, flatter front radiator, known as the ‘Flachkühler.’ This gorgeous black 1970 naturally has both, making it really rather special. It is a very tidy USA-market car that recently arrived in Europe as part of the seller’s collection.

The black metallic paintwork is nicely accented with a set of ‘Mexican Hat’ alloys and some well-kept chrome work. Inside, a lovely tan leather interior shows light patina that arguably adds character to this handsome 56-year-old car.

The vendor tells us that the car runs and drives well, without fault. A great find for the many fans of these sumptuous cars.
