The Appeal
While MG was fettling the B over in Abingdon, in Italy’s ‘motor city’ Turin, Alfa’s engineers were working to a similar brief. The result, however, was very different. The last project of Battista Pininfarina and equipped with the superb ‘Nord’ twin cam, the Spider was the bespoke Italian suit to the B’s Burton two-piece.
The original Spider is one classic motoring’s true greats. An icon. Here is a chance to get in on the scene with a rare project that you can complete to your own spec. It is a 1972 ‘conda tronca’ Series 2 Spider that was acquired by the seller in 2009, following a restoration, and was used regularly until 2017. It is the desirable 2L model and configured in RHD.
There is obvious work to do, but it comes with a large cache of panels and parts to complete the job. The vendor tells us that the parts were bought on advice from an Alfa specialist based on what the car needed in 2017. For the right buyer, this looks like an interesting way into Spider ownership without the usually high initial outlay for a restored car.
The vendor says:
“When I was a child in the early 70s I saw my dream car in a film. A few years later I discovered it's name (and the film!) and in the early noughties I was finally able to afford one. I owned my dream car. I loved it ,drove it weekly and cherished it. It was my car forever until I was persuaded to hand it over to the wrong people at what certainly became the wrong time! It wasn't a Ferrari Dino, or a Lamborghini Espada but for me it was as good as if not better than everything else I drew up against at the lights. Bright red, black and silver with the doors (and the headlamps) for the Gods. It was so important to me it became immortalized in my art (alantrueart.com) even in its sorry state.
“The storage I have is also finite so sadly it is time. There is a reserve because I know it has a value. It has been dry for several years and is complete. Small change for a little bit of heaven.”

The vendor says:
“I bought the vehicle in 2006. It had previously been restored and I have extensive documentation to this effect. The car however is now badly in need of restoration. From the date of purchase in 2006 as with all my previous classics, the car was garage and used on a once weekly basis, often more depending on the weather. The car was cherished, maintened and mot'd up until 2017 when I was advised to commit to some welding work.
“This commenced a period of neglect and deterioration for the car. I rescued the vehicle which other than the removal of some body work on the sils had been untouched for 4 years. I removed the car and since then it has been stored in a giant greenhouse. In this period the car has been transported to a major Alfa Romeo parts and restoration works whereby I asked them to inspect and sell me the panels (at that time) they felt we're required to restore the car. I subsequently bought 17 panels, skins and sils and these would be included in the sale. I also have a brand new pair of headlamp blisters and a brand new set of carpets for the car ,also included in the sale.
“The car has had the interior removed, the brightwork removed and the lights, all however have been stored and are safe. The car ran without problem and the engine was good although not turned over in 18 months. The front Wings, boot and bonnet are all solid as are the doors. The seats whilst only afflicted with a few minor splits on the seams are still in need of attention. The 'ferrari' wheels are clean and the tyres have less than 500 miles in them. It has a wood effect steering wheel, unfortunately it does have a split in the dashboard.”
