The Appeal
The 1972 Buick Riviera is widely regarded as one of the most dramatic designs to emerge from Detroit. Penned under the direction of Bill Mitchell, its striking "boat-tail" rear end and sweeping fastback profile set it apart from anything else on the road, then or now. With its 455 cu in (7.5-litre) V8 delivering effortless power through a relaxed, grand-touring character, the third-generation Riviera remains one of the most visually arresting and desirable American cars of the early 1970s.
This particular example carries an intriguing history, reportedly having been acquired from the U.S. Embassy before undergoing a comprehensive renovation. Since that work was completed, it has been carefully stored as part of a private collection. The interior is described by the vendor as being in very good condition, feeling akin to a new car following the restoration work. Externally, the only blemish of note is a minor 15mm scratch near the bonnet.
Mechanically, the Riviera was serviced earlier this year with fresh fluids, a carburettor clean, and new spark plugs, and the vendor reports that the V8 runs smoothly and sounds as it should. For those seeking a commanding, head-turning American classic with real presence, this Riviera warrants serious attention.DSC02807.JPG16.28 MB
