The Appeal
It may look, at first glance, like a three box saloon, but it’s the details that elevate the W108 to design masterpiece and explain its enduring appeal with collectors. The swoop of the rear arch line, the distinctive ‘stacked’ headlights, the kink in the seam between front and rear doors are all hints at Paul Bracq’s mastery.
This beautiful Caledonia Green metallic 280SE shows that all off to very good effect because it is in great condition. Rust free and all original steel work and paint is in place. One of the last built, it benefits from the durable M130 2.8L motor with fuel injection and a 4spd manual box.
The car was first registered in South Africa and spent its life there enjoying the country’s dry cosseting climes before arriving in the UK in 2016. It has had just three keepers since arriving and we are told comes with a large history file.
Although usefully MOT, tax and ULEZ exempt, there is a recent MOT that ran to April 2024 and contained no advisories.
Factory standard and with that fetching colour scheme, this is a really appealing example of one of Mercedes’ greatest saloons.
