The Appeal
As early as 1971 racing driver and engineer, Ken Costello, had fitted the BMC version of the Buick 3.5L V8 engine into the nose of an MGB. Ken understood two key facts that led to this experiment. The MGB’s engine bay had been designed to house a bigger V4 engine that never made production and that the alloy V8 was essentially no heavier than the standard B-series engine. Such was the success of Costello’s V8 cars that British Leyland launched their own V8 MGB GT in 1973. The ample torque of the V8 was widely regarded to have transformed the MGB GT’s driving dynamics.
This car, although starting life as a standard MGB GT, has subsequently benefitted from a number of modifications and upgrades. A key one being the fitting of a Rover 3.5L V8 engine mated to a five-speed gearbox. Other cosmetic, Sebring style modifications result in a BGT that looks as good as it drives.FsHuIhllW2x9OYIBACao8Qvd6anH22WWsZGYCrop.jpg674.08 KB
The History and Paperwork
The chassis number of this car marks it out as an 1800 MGB GT originally
The car is thought to have left the Abington factory in late 1978
Records show that the car was finished in blue at that time
The car has been used and enjoyed by 11 previous keepers
The previous owner kept the car for 25 years between 1995 and 2020
In that ownership the car was restored and upgraded
It also underwent its colour change during that period
The current owner acquired the MG in December 2020
In that time around 400 miles or so have been added
The car comes with some useful paperwork
This includes the V5 in the name of the current owner
This categorises the MG as an Historic Vehicle
As such the car is MOT and VED exempt in the UK
Despite that it holds a current, advisory free MOT
This is valid until June 2024
A number of earlier MOTs in hard copy are also present
A document is present detailing the upgrades undertaken in 2018
There are also a number of maintenance and repair invoices present
These document significant expenditure between 2018 and present
In the realms of classic MGs of the 1970’s, the MGB GT V8 is somewhat of a sweet spot. The muscular 3.5L V8 took the slightly anaemic 1,800cc version and put some fire in its belly. Although this is not a factory V8 BGT it has clearly been professionally attended to endowing it with all the key attributes associated with the V8 cars.
The modifications to this model really help set it apart from more humdrum examples. Its nicely resolved livery combined with Sebring style upgrades hark back to many competition orientated MGs of the past. This hasn’t seemed to have detracted from the eminent usability of this example, however, with the owner reporting it as “understated but powerful.” To get behind the wheel of this uniquely presented and modified example, be sure to bid early.
