The Appeal
To truly appreciate the genius of the Citroën 2CV, one has to understand that this was the car destined to replace the horse and cart in rural France. For many rural communities, this simple yet superbly engineered little car offered a first taste of motorised personal transport. Its innovative suspension is arguably yet to be bettered, while the straightforward air-cooled engine that drives the front wheels could readily be mended with the most primitive of tools.
Great design endures, and the Citroën 2CV is no exception, remaining in production from 1948 until 1990. This remarkably original, matching numbers 2CV6 Special dates from 1985. The vendor tells us:
"1985 Citroën 2CV6 Special in yellow (Jaune) with a genuine 46,446 miles recorded. Supplied new by Charles Lewis Citroën Ltd of Abbey Foregate, Shrewsbury on 1st August 1985 its first local lady owner kept the car until July 2002 covering just over 46,000 miles and having recorded 15 services mainly at the supplying dealer.
"I purchased the car purely for prosperity in July 2002 as I worked at Charles Lewis Citroën in 1985 when the car was sold. Fortunately, I was in a position to rectify the usual faults through the company I worked for making use of the franchised bodyshop’s facility and technicians. The intentional tidy up turned into a full body off restoration and a new galvanised chassis from 2CV City in Sowerby Bridge. Although this car is not concours its extremely good as the images show and is welcome to any inspection by appointment."
