The Appeal
The Mercedes-Benz 190 series were a smashing series of sedans. Designed by Bruno Sacco, these were perhaps some of the most safety-oriented cars in the company’s catalogue, boasting light-weight, high-strength steel, airbags, ABS brakes and seatbelt pre-tensioners.
However, it was the Cosworth range - the 190Es - that is perhaps the most legendary. Their Cosworth engines provided remarkably flexible, versatile running, making use of the British company’s expertise in line with the German brand’s exceptional build quality. The result was a new standard in what a Merc was capable of.
This left-hand-drive example has spent its life in Andorra, where it’s clearly been cossetted. Unusually, it left the factory with little-to-no options, making for a remarkably unfettered, analogue driving experience.
The History and Paperwork
- First registered in Andorra in 1988
- The car is currently registered with the Automobile Museum of Andorra as an official classic.
- This marks this 2.3L 16v as one of the final production models
- In the same ownership all the way up until 2004
- From here it was owned by an enthusiast as part of a private collection
- Restoration undertaken from 2013 onwards
- In current ownership since 2022, having been newly serviced
- The vendor informs us that the car has only 1000km since their ownership began
- The vendor also reports he undertakes a 5km every few weeks to keep the car in good stead
- The car now carries a genuine mileage of 211,546km

The Interior

The cabin of the Cosworth is exactly the comforting, stylish environment you'd expect from Mercedes-Benz. With its angular lines, the wooden accent to the stick shift enclosure and the period cassette player, it’s all a very evocative time capsule, and highly original.
This 190e was outshopped with very few factory options, making for a highly organic, analogue experience.
The leather upholstery is in superb order, with only a minor age-commensurate patina. There’s not a single rip or tear that we can highlight, and the door cards appear to be in a similar state of fettle. The carpets and headlining look absolutely superb.
The instruments are all clean and easy to read, with no major faults we’ve been able to spot. There are very few signs of wear on the pedals or gear knob, which seems to indicate that much of the car’s mileage has been relatively unfussy travelling on the highways.
The boot is clean and well-kept, with good solid floors, and shows no signs of corrosion or perforation.
The Exterior

With its compact bodywork, angular retro styling and that all-important grille, this is a very handsome car that captures the ethos of late-80s design beautifully. A good thorough look around the vehicle displays very little in the way of wear.
The bodywork is straight and tightly knit, with only a very light scratch to the driver’s side bumper corner, and the occasional, gentle stone chip. The moulding is all in good order, and the panel fit looks exactly as it would have been from the Stuttgart factory. As if to sweeten the deal further, we’ve been unable to spot a single sign of corrosion.
The car’s glasswork and lenses look in fine order, with all of the window rubbers free of obvious cracking or wear. The all-important grille, branding and brightwork are all in good condition with very little sign of wear.
The car is sat on its original factory wheels, which are shod in an excellent set of Dunlop tyres boasting plenty of tread. Underneath, the car has clearly benefited enormously from the Andorra climate. We can’t see any signs of corrosion and instead are treated to plenty of nice, clean metalwork. We note that the self-levelling hydraulic suspension is original, and not modified with the Sparco struts so many 190es have been fitted with.

Popping open the hood of this 190e reveals the ever-acclaimed Cosworth engine, this model’s secret weapon. With its distinctive whine, and Cosworth’s uniquely cast cylinder head, these cars are a much-loved icon of a bygone era, while still remaining very usable out on the road.
The example looks in good order, with no faults we’re able to highlight in the engine bay. There are no reported leaks, knocks, bangs, or smoke. The vendor does think a tune-up wouldn’t go amiss, but it’s far from an urgent priority. The brakes, suspension and transmission are all in fine working order, though the vendor does note a slight pressure release sound coming from the rear of the suspension. This doesn’t affect its operation and is likely to be nothing more than a stuck valve.
The car is working exactly as you’d expect, and has never presented any problems for the owner.
Summary
A distinctive, well-respected classic with a legendary powerplant - that should be enough to attract plenty of attention alone, but the real standout here is how original and well-kept the car is - plus, of course, the analogue interior spec. We’ve no doubt this impressive car shall get plenty of attention!
