The Appeal
Bruno Sacco styled it beautifully, and Mercedes’ engineers surely burnt the midnight oil to give the pillarless C126 that ‘hewn from stone’ feel. Vanishingly expensive when new, these cars are gathering a strong following for their 80s style, durability and sheer usability. They make great touring cars.
This 1988 example has the big 300bhp 5L M116 V8 that munches miles so effortlessly. It was reportedly resprayed last year in understated black metallic, similar to the blue/black finish it left the factory in. Mechanically, it has recently undergone a major service. That work included servicing the gearbox and replacing the rear callipers. The vendor describes the driving experience as everything a 500 SEC should deliver. The interior trim shows some age-related wear that the vendor notes would be straightforward to address. With an advisory-free MOT valid until September 2027 and a file of paperwork, this 500 SEC is a tidy example with room to make it even better.
The vendor says:
“The car is in amazing condition throughout. Once the leather and the headlining is done, there wouldn't be much else to do. Very inexpensive to do and will make a massive difference to the overall look of the vehicle.”
