The Appeal

How does that proverb go again? “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix”.

Well, we imagine that’s exactly the sort of thing Maranello’s engineers said - (although presumably in Italian) - when devising a replacement for the hugely successful 308.

Introduced in 1985, the 328 essentially borrowed its predecessor’s design and improved upon it in a number of small yet significant ways, resulting in what is still regarded as one of the most accomplished cars Ferrari has ever produced. The chassis and bodywork both underwent a series of upgrades, and the engine capacity was upped by 200 cc to 3.2-litres.

Of all the Italian mid-engined sports cars, the 328 is probably the easiest to live with as they proved reliable in period and maintenance can be performed without lowering the engine out the bottom of the chassis.

This 1989 328 GTS is in superb order both cosmetically and mechanically: It presents beautifully inside and out, while remaining highly original. And on the oily side of things, it benefits from a recent cam belt service (just 233 miles ago) and comes with an advisory-free MOT.

There’s a substantial history file containing a wealth of servicing invoices as well as original dealer material including its handbooks and service booklet which contains ten stamps. With just 56,017 warranted miles under its belt, this Ferrari would be a worthy addition to any collection.

The Condition

Besides a few small scuffs to the offside front wheel (kerbside in the UK), the other Ferrari-branded 18” alloys present very well indeed

While there were some obvious styling revisions, the 328 is often mistaken for its 308 predecessor - and that’s no bad thing as both are beautiful cars. Penned by Pininfarina, the 328’s flowing lines and muscular rear haunches hint at its performance, while the irrefutably cool pop-up headlamps leave onlookers in no doubt that it was a product of the 1980s.

Condition-wise, this car has survived remarkably well and still presents highly inside, out and underneath. Unlike the heavily restored examples you see which seldom stray far from the concours lawn for fear of accruing a stone chip, this 328 is immensely usable. That is to say there are some very small signs of use upon close inspection, but certainly nothing noteworthy.

The interior has worn well, wearing very little thanks to such low mileage. The leather remains supple and free from notable marks, while the controls and switchgear present beautifully for a Ferrari of this vintage.

With 270 horsepower on tap via a glorious ‘dog-leg’ gated manual gearbox, the 328 is addictive to drive fast. Its 3.2-litre V8 is mounted transversely amidships, affording the car excellent weight distribution and ensuring you can hear its sonorous induction howl right behind your head.

Benefiting from a recent belt service, this example is reportedly ready to drive. It has covered few miles during recent years, so we suggest braking it in gently prior to stretching its legs, yet the advisory-free MOT and huge collection of invoices are added reassurance that this Ferrari is in fine fettle.
