APPEAL
The 420 SL is just such a well put together and great modern classic to own. It has ample power and performance, timeless looks and Mercedes engineering and build quality, with the 420 being a rarer model from the range.
It’s also two cars in one with its hard-top for winter and the coupe look, and with the hard-top removed, a great convertible roadster for the summer months.
This 420 SL comes with all its original documentation and a fully stamped up service book showing how well it’s been maintained through its years by either Mercedes or specialists. It looks pretty good too, and this one has the all-important V8 soundtrack and boy does it sounds good.
HISTORY AND PAPERWORK
- First registered in May 1989
- Very low mileage
- Original manuals and service book
- Extensive service history
- Toolkit and spare wheel
- Two keys
- MOT expires 17/04/2023
- No MOT advisories
INTERIOR
- Excellent condition throughout
- Matching half-leather seats and door cards
- JVC radio
There’s very little sign of use within the SL interior of this SL, which makes it a great place to spend time. The half-leather upholstery on the seats matches the door cards and is in good condition throughout. Even the driver’s seat appears to be almost new , with almost no wear to the bolster which is usually the first to show fading or scuffs.
Burr walnut veneer gives the dashboard a sense of class and it still holds a deep shine, showing the highly figured grain at its best. Analogue gauges fill the instrument cluster with useful information and a JVC radio/CD player has been fitted. The controls and switchgear are all said to work as they should, and the rest of the cabin presents exceptionally well with no damage or rips to any of the fabrics or trim.
The carpets are in good clean condition throughout, and the boot is similarly well presented. Below the boot floor is a spare wheel with what appears to be an unused Michelin tyre, and the original Mercedes-Benz first aid kit. A fire extinguisher is mounted in the passenger footwell.
EXTERIOR
- Excellent bright red paintwork
- Original alloy wheels fitted with Michelin tyres
- Very good overall condition
The paintwork is in great overall condition with very few marks or blemishes, only a few tiny specks on the bonnet which appear to be white paint. We could find almost no other issues with the paint, with no signs of blistering or significant scratches or cracks.
The shut lines and the body all look good, with the alloy wheels and Michelin tyres all being in fine condition, along with all the external trim and badging. Underneath, the body appears to be clean and straight, while there is the usual amount of surface corrosion we would expect to see on a car of this age.
In all, the exterior of this Mercedes gives us the impression that this car has been well looked after and sensibly stored. It comes fitted with its factory-supplied hardtop, which sits nicely on the car and makes for a comfortable all-weather vehicle.
MECHANICS
- 4,196cc V8, producing 215 hp
- Extensive service history
- Recently completed servicing
With its 4.2 litre V8 engine driving the rear wheels through an automatic transmission, this Mercedes is a capable performer when it needs to be, but also a relaxed cruiser when it suits.
The car has reportedly had a recent service and is presented in very good all-round original condition, with an exceptionally clean and tidy engine bay. Lifting the bonnet reveals what appears to be a very well cared for V8 engine.
It is said to start and drive extremely well, with everything working and no known issues to report. So with the reputation for solid engineering and impeccable build quality which accompanies any Mercedes from this era, you will be able to enjoy this 420 SL with confidence.
SUMMARY
Here we have a fabulous original example of the timeless Mercedes SL with the rarer 4.2 litre engine, incredibly low mileage and extensive service history. It is presented in fantastic condition inside and out, wearing bright red paintwork and upholstered with a half-leather interior.
This 420 SL would be a useable and versatile everyday classic, or one to be used for long continental tours, or simply tucked away and enjoyed at the weekend when the sun is shining.
