The Appeal
The W126 500 SEL sits at the very top of Mercedes-Benz's celebrated S-Class range of the 1980s. Combining a long-wheelbase body with the effortless power of a 5.0-litre V8, it was conceived as the definitive executive express – a car as comfortable covering continents as it was gliding through city streets. It's a beautifully rugged, long-lived car that could have gained a reputation for remarkable endurance and over-engineering.
This particular car was first registered in March 1989 and began life as a chauffeur-driven vehicle. It has passed through just five registered keepers, with three from the same family, before being purchased by the current vendor from Car & Classic in June 2022. A cosmetic restoration followed in May 2024, which included a new rear screen and bumpers, the work on which has been supported by a photographic record.
