The Appeal
If the W140's main identity was a sharp-featured luxury car of refinement, it couldn't be denied that the 600SEL was the line's car of excess. The 600SEL was created in response to BMW's new 7-Series, and even saw the car delayed so that Mercedes-Benz' engine department could catch up with a new V12 powerplant.
The resulting car was a remarkable one. Thanks to that huge twelve-cylinder engine, it offered circa 400bhp and was quicker, roomier, and perhaps even more comfortable than the Bentley Turbo R. Sure, it came with an enormous price tag—well over a hundred thousand pounds—but when it felt so luxurious, so powerful, and yet so contemporary, it was hard to deny that it offered a flagship worthy of it.
To this day, the W140 is often lauded as the last of the true S-Class cars, built like tanks and engineered to the extreme rather than seeking magazine covers and market-driven trends. That's quite an accolade, and they're the epitome of modern classic today - rightfully fawned over by enthusiasts.
This 1992 example comes to us in highly original order, with a beguiling two-tone livery and that oh-so-desirable V12 still purring as ever it has. image.png3.22 MB
