1993 Dennis Rapier Fire Engine

Highlights

  • One of only 13 such appliances commissioned for Surrey Fire and Rescue Services
  • One of the last purpose-built fire engines built at the Dennis works in Guildford
  • Known history from new, starting life at Sunbury Fire Station in 1993
  • Restored to fully operational condition by Fire Engine Services

The Appeal

The Dennis Rapier was one of the final purpose-built fire engines to leave the celebrated Dennis factory in Guildford. With bodywork designed by John Dennis, it marks the twilight of a proud manufacturing tradition that served fire brigades across the country for decades.
This particular Rapier is one of just 13 commissioned by Surrey Fire and Rescue Services, delivered new to Sunbury Fire Station in 1993. It served on the front line there until 2009, then continued under the Surrey Fire and Rescue banner until 2010, when a group of former Surrey firefighters acquired it. Stored outdoors on a farm in Cranleigh, it was subsequently found to have a cracked pump casing and gearbox electronics in need of attention.

Fire Engine Services restored the appliance to full operational status and stowed it out accordingly. Powered by a 280 HP Cummins engine, this Rapier is now used for charity events and pleasure outings, offering a chance to acquire a working piece of British fire service heritage with a traceable history from new.
