The Appeal

Completely revolutionising the popular image of the city car, becoming ubiquitous with the United Kingdom's pop-culture image and with over five million units sold, it's perhaps of little surprise that the Mini managed to remain in production for over forty years. The final iterations of the little tight-chassis'd automobile are amongst the most refined, eminently drivable classics out there.

Later examples like this 1997 model benefit from the addition of a five-speed gearbox while retaining the raw, go-kart-like driving experience that made the Mini famous. This particular example has been comprehensively refurbished by its current owner, who purchased it in December 2017 as a personal retirement project to continue a long association with the marque.

The work has been extensive and distinctive. The original engine was replaced with a reconditioned 1,100cc unit fitted with a high lift fast road camshaft, and the vendor reports it starts well and pulls strongly through the gears. Perhaps most noticeably, the interior was reconfigured by an ex-Jaguar employee to suit the owner's 6ft 5in frame, converting it to a two-seater with an extended gear linkage for additional leg room and comfort. Any tall enthusiast with experience in a factory Mini will no doubt tell you this is a much-needed modification!
