The Appeal
Audi’s 80-based B4 convertible arrived at a time when the firm was engineering-led and focused on longevity. These handsome four-seat convertibles were galvanised from new and exuded a sort of effortless, egalitarian style that few of their rivals could muster. It’s a package of appeal that clearly suited Princess Diana, who lent the car an enduring cool when she ran one in 1994.
This highly original 1998 car’s state of preservation is down to a combination of the factory build quality and the very sparing use. Its tough 1.8L 125bhp engine is barely run it at 37,500 miles. These motors were equipped with the 20V head developed for the Quattro. The attractive Byzantz paintwork, which changes from blue to purple in the light, is original and well kept and matched with a durable grey part-leather interior. The vendor notes that the factory alloys have never been restored and would benefit from renovation, but that is not particularly noticeable in the photos. It is fitted with a replacement mohair hood.
The car has had just three keepers during its 28 years. It was originally registered as a factory demonstrator, which likely explains the high specification, before remaining with a subsequent keeper from 1999 to 2025. The vendor acquired the car recently. It was serviced in July 2026, work that also included Lanoguard treatment for the underside.
Holding a fresh MOT with no advisories, the car comes with a history file including the original bill of sale. The vendor reports that everything works mechanically as it should, and that the car drives smoothly. With its originality and careful custodianship, this Cabriolet presents a fine opportunity to acquire a well-documented, increasingly collectable modern classic.
The vendor says:
“A perfect modern appreciating classic. A joy to waft along in. The 1.8 is sprightly enough for modern traffic whilst returning sensible MPG. The ride quality is fantastic and surprisingly little wind turbulence when driving at speed. Always puts a smile on faces and nice comments from people when filling up with fuel. Can you talk about an Audi Cab without mentioning Lady Diana????.....”
