The Appeal

There’s something that keeps us from completely letting go of certain vehicle models, those cars that helped create the golden era of Japanese sports cars. The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI is the perfect example; now over two decades old and it still has a firm grasp on many of our heartstrings. It, and all of its younger and older siblings, have aged like fine wine - but even if it weren’t for the looks, the potential that these cars put on the table would keep bringing us back for more, time and time again. A high performance hero of its day, bringing rally car capability to the road.

This example we’re presented with is shown in largely original condition, with the exception of some tasteful aesthetic and performance modifications that enhance the aforementioned potential these cars present. Running a staggering 440 bhp, this Evo surely isn’t for the faint-hearted, probably more focused on those who find thrill in throwing themselves off bridges suspended by nothing but a glorified rubber band… Saying that, being behind the wheel of this feels pretty similar.

The History and Paperwork

First UK registered on the 9th of December 1999
V5C is present and in the current keepers name, ready for transfer
V5C declares the vehicle was registered overseas - no further information on this
5 previous owners from new, including the current keeper
Owned by the present custodian since March of 2017
Current MOT is valid until the 16th of April 2024, with only minor advisories for corrosion

The Interior

Seemingly largely original interior, featuring the blue and black Recaro bucket seats
Fabric upholstery remains in good condition, it does have signs of use and age like any vehicle this age, but no off putting rips or tears in the seats. The rear seats are presented in better condition
Original Momo steering wheel present, signs of use around the outer rim
Drivers side door card fabric has come loose over time, and the others show some glue separation and the fabric coming away from the door panel - a common problem
Aftermarket floor mats with blue piping to tie in with the seats, present themselves well with the normal signs of wear - no rips or tears
Original carpets underneath all appear to be well kept with no worn through areas
Blue-faced gauges are well kept with no unwelcome warning lights present upon vehicle startup
Dashboard appears free from any damage or cracks
Centre console controls all appear functional, with some signs of wear on the high tactile areas such as the interior fan speed control
Sony head unit fitted
Build number plaque installed just in front of the manual transmission gear shifter
Gear shifter and leather boot show signs of age and use
Boot carpets all present with just some staining

The Exterior

Pyrenees black pearl paintwork shows signs of age with some marks and stone chips
Small crack on the offside front wheel arch close to the bumper, and some hints that the arch on this side has had paintwork. The front bumper on this corner also shows some signs of paintwork being carried out
Angel eye headlights
Front and rear light all appear free from any damage or fading, just the lower front fog lights show their signs of age
Kei Racing D2 alloys which are presented well with only minor minor and few marks, all shod in good tyres
All panels appear to be straight and true with good panel gaps throughout
Original rear deck wing present and in good shape
Driver side rear caliper has some paint peeling - easy fix
Some corrosion noted at both driver and passenger side rear wheel arches - not excessive

The Mechanics

2.0-litre four cylinder turbo engine (4G63), renowned for their reliability and tuning potential
5-speed manual transmission, reported to remain smooth and defined in its gear changes promoting driver confidence and introducing no unwelcome noises ‘
A whopping 440 BHP output quoted from the owner, due to modifications undertaken by the previous keeper - most, if not all, of the invoices pertaining to the mechanical work is kept in the 6 A4 booklets
All-wheel drive configuration allowing for tremendous levels of grips from the get-go, excessive acceleration forces as well as excellent levels of grip due to the lightweight and well balanced chassis
Brembo braking system is reported to be well functional, slowing this road-going jet with ease
Suspension is reported to be in good condition, of course it isn’t going to grant you high levels of comfort but that isn’t what these cars were designed for - performance is paramount
Recent MOT certificate shows some corrosion on a brake pipe, fuel pipe as well as some light mist on the nearside front shock absorber, and some play in the steering rack inner joint
Vehicle undersealed to protect from corrosion

Summary

The Evo 6 is the embodiment of 90’s performance, bringing rally car levels of performance to the road, there certainly wasn’t much around that could keep up with any vehicle equipped with the 4G63. Now, with this vehicles upgrades, that list of vehicles just got shorter.
