The Appeal
After decades of building SLs, the R230 gave Sport Leicht enthusiasts something genuinely new - the Vario folding hard top roof. It proved so popular that Mercedes’ competitors quickly adopted the idea.
That roof is key to the appeal of the R230, a big, comfortable GT that can be used in all weathers. Not that the current keeper of this smart Tanzanite Blue 2002 SL500 has tested that theory - he bought the car in 2010 and tells us that it has only ever been used in sunny weather and never in the rain. In between, it is safely garage-stored with a cover.
That much is evident from the photos. This is a really well-kept example whose history file tells the same story as the bodywork and interior. There’s a run of regular servicing to support the low displayed mileage. It has been looked after regardless of the relatively light use, with the last service in May 2026. The current MOT runs to June 2027 with no advisories.
There are plenty of R2230s about, but few that have been treated with the evident care and enthusiasm of this nicely specified example.
The vendor says:
“I love this car and have done since 2010. It’s wonderful to drive although I only cruise around in the sunshine. The hood folds up and down perfectly. The color and trim color go together so well. I’ve always said, ‘if it had wings it would fly’! It’s a very powerful car that looks beautiful.”
