The Appeal

The Subaru WRX STI has long been revered for its rally-bred combination of turbocharged boxer power, symmetrical all-wheel drive and a chassis that rewards committed driving. This 2015 VAB-chassis NR4 example, however, is no ordinary STI. It is reported to be one of a small batch of approximately ten Japanese domestic market cars supplied directly by Subaru Tecnica International in Japan to JRM Group of Northamptonshire, Subaru's official NR4 Base Team, as homologation donor cars for the FIA's NR4 production rally programme. These were the very base cars from which JRM built the competition machines that went on to contest WRC 2, ERC 2 and the British Rally Championship, with David Higgins famously winning the production class at Wales Rally GB 2015 by more than five minutes.

As a JDM-specification car, it differs meaningfully from the UK showroom STI. It carries the 2.0-litre EJ207 turbocharged engine, the strengthened TY85 six-speed manual gearbox, Driver Controlled Centre Differential and JDM-specification drivetrain and suspension, hardware directly akin to that which underpinned the rally cars themselves. Finished in the iconic WR Blue Pearl, it spent part of its life in Barbados before being imported and registered on UK plates. The vendor describes it as sharp, quick and focused, with a feel and soundtrack befitting its motorsport origins. It presents a rare opportunity to acquire a genuine piece of Subaru's modern rallying supply chain, a road car with a factory competition pedigree behind it.
