The Appeal
The Southern GT GT40 is widely regarded as one of the most faithful recreations of Ford's legendary endurance racer ever produced. Built in Hampshire by founder Mike Soliss from 2000 until his retirement in 2021, Southern GT earned an enviable reputation among enthusiasts for the authenticity and quality of its cars - a lineage that continues today as the AK40, built by AK Sports Cars.
This particular example is a Mk1 recreation presented in period-correct Le Mans 1964 specification, finished in Ford Oxford White with black 'Ford' side decals. At the heart of the car sits a 5.0-litre/302 cubic-inch Ford V8, rebuilt by respected engine specialists Real Steel, mated to a rebuilt Renault UN1 five-speed manual gearbox with a limited-slip differential. The gear shifter is mounted on the right-hand sill, just as it was in the original GT40.
Built between 2021 and 2025, the car is accompanied by a substantial documentation file including engine dating records from Real Steel. It has passed IVA and is registered for road use with a UK V5C. For anyone seeking a faithful and carefully constructed tribute to one of motorsport's most iconic machines, this is well worth a closer look.
