The Appeal
The Simca 1300’s designer, the elegantly named Mario Revelli de Beaumont, has been called “the most prolific designer you’ve never heard of.” He designed the remarkable 1935 Monaco-Trossi single seater as well as Fiat’s pre-war 1500. Yet his most populous creation is arguably similarly overlooked, with the stylish and hugely capable 1300 often in the shadows compared to better-known 60s saloons.
That is a shame, because as you can see from this well-preserved 1964 car, it is a very neat design. In period, it was noted for its handling and comfort, the former helped by Macpherson struts and the latter down to a spacious cabin with big, spongy seats.
These are all qualities that make this 1300 appealing either as a daily driver or weekend family treat. Finished in understated grey with a matching interior, both said to be original, it is a solid and very honest car. It benefits from a long list of recent work including new cylinder head, replacement tyres, new shock absorbers and fuel system repairs. There is scope to improve it, or perhaps enjoy its refreshing originality. With recently renewed Controle Technique valid to January 2030, perhaps there’s no rush to do anything. Instead, get out and enjoy it.
