The Appeal
Many consider the Lancia Flaminia Super Sport Zagato to be among Zagato's finest and most harmonious designs. Featuring an aluminium body, the famous double-bubble roof, and aerodynamics refined by the Kamm-tail rear treatment, the Super Sport sat at the peak of the Flaminia's development. With approximately 150 examples built, it is a notably rare machine - and one that commands serious attention whenever it comes to market.
This particular car is a late-production example, benefiting from the most developed specification: the 2.8-litre V6 with three Weber 40 DCN carburetors producing 150 HP, paired with recessed headlights that distinguish the Super Sport from earlier Zagato Flaminias. Crucially, it retains its matching numbers engine. Approximately €50,000 has recently been spent on a thorough engine rebuild by a well-known specialist, and the vendor reports that the engine has been properly run in and is ready for spirited use.
The car arrived in the Netherlands in 2017 and has since benefited from documented maintenance including a major technical inspection, a comprehensive brake overhaul, and various mechanical servicing. A 2020 appraisal by Grutama & Luxwolda valued the car at €275,000, with the report describing it as being in very good condition. Dutch registered and offered with service history, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most sought-after post-war Italian grand tourers. With its sleek art-deco curves and handsome bubble cabin, the Zagato bodywork is what really sets this car beyond the pale. It's a curvy, luxurious silhouette, with a distinctive hood scoop, smatterings of chrome and lovely bevelled glass. It's real mid-century Italian glamour, through and through.
This example was subject to an appraisal in 2020, and got very high marks. The years appear to have been kind since. Lancia (227).jpg1.63 MB
The Mechanics
2,775cc (2.8-litre) V6 engine producing 150 HP
Three Weber 40 DCN carburetors
4-speed manual transmission
Approximately €50,000 recently spent on a comprehensive engine rebuild by a specialist; the vendor reports the engine has been properly run in
2017: driveshaft boots replaced, ball joint replaced, brake booster secured, engine mounts repaired, engine oil and filter replaced, ignition system and distributor cleaned and adjusted, contact points cleaned and adjusted, valve clearances adjusted
2019: front and rear brake calipers removed and rebuilt, pistons and seals replaced, brake hoses and discs replaced, left steering ball joint boot replaced, system cleaned, reassembled, and road tested
2021: gear linkage rubber replaced
It's hardly a surprise that a Lancia product manages to impress with its performance. Carried by a 2.8-litre V6 fed by a complex arrangement of three Weber carbs, it's a torquey, dynamic car that takes off on a dime and proves very capable out on the road. A good example has never been more sought after.
The vendor reports that the car has been subject to plenty of recent investment in recent years, and has been properly 'run in' to suit the lucky new owner. Lancia (247).jpg2.12 MB
