The Appeal
It took the looks and idea of Porsche’s 924, but Mazda’s RX7 then headed in a whole new direction. Beneath the low, chiselled bonnet lies the firm’s clever Wankel rotary 1,147cc engine that delivered power quite unlike any conventional petrol engine.
The Series 2 from 1980 got updated aesthetics and this example is an early one of those. Classically finished in bronze metallic, a popular RX7 color, it is highly original right down to the brown and red fabric interior and three-spoke rotary alloys. The only variations from factory are said to be a Racing Beat exhaust and air filter. The original exhaust is supplied with the car. It has covered under 98,000 km (about 61k miles) from new.
The vendor acquired the car in 2018 from a Dutch collector. He tells us that he used it regularly for events and rallies up to 2020, when it was put into storage.
The car presents well, with a few points to note in the photos. We are told that the car will need a service and two spark plug wires plus a general check-over. The RX7 is one of the most interesting classic coupes of recent decades and this car offers plenty of potential.
