The Appeal
It’s California, the 60s; there’s the power of flowers, long hair and acoustic guitars and endless sun-drenched beaches. It’s a scene that isn’t complete without one of VW’s split-screen buses, the hippie people carrier of choice.
If you weren’t there or don’t recall it, let this evocative Velvet Green Splittie do that for you. It’s a highly original, unmodified T1 that was despatched to the USA in 1966 and then to Little Rock, California, the home of EZ camper conversions. One of the best-known and most accessible T1 converters, EZ was kept busy. We suspect few of the handful of survivors are as good as this one.
The vendor acquired this T1 in Utah in late 2024, subsequently moving it to the UK and registering it here. He tells us that it was restored in 2009. Despite the passage of time, sparing use and a favourable climate mean it still presents in really good order - the interior is a particular gem. The rear cabin retains its EZ Camper layout with a foldout bench seat/bed, wood panelling, storage cabinets, foldaway tables, and winding aluminium windows complete with mosquito mesh and privacy curtains — a well-thought-out setup that reflects the character of the original conversion.
Mechanically, the bus runs a replacement 1,600cc air-cooled flat-four through a four-speed manual transaxle with gear reduction boxes. Since arriving in the UK it has benefitted from a long list of work covering carburettors, fuel pump, brakes and a rear hub seal kit. It is MOT exempt by age but was usefully tested in June 2025 with no advisories. A fantastic time traveller for the discerning enthusiast.
