The Appeal
Introduced in 1967, the Lotus Elan +2 combined the outstanding performance and handling of the Elan with a longer wheelbase, wider track and more spacious cabin that included two small rear seats. The model was a success and was made until 1975, two years after production of the original stopped. Despite this, and its non-rusting fibreglass body, fewer than 1,200 are estimated to still be in existence, making this a rare example.
This car acquired its deep gloss blue colour (in place of the original red) in 2020. The seller states that it is polished regularly, while pointing out a small scrape on the rear bumper and a minor indentation on the bonnet caused by proximity to the radiator cap. The car is fitted with black wheels with chrome rims and three-spoke spinners.
Inside, the interior features refurbished black seats and carpets, walnut dashboard and three-spoke wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel. The seller states that all instruments work, with the exception of the unconnected radio, and that the speedometer is “a little temperamental, despite a new cable and speedo gear”. In the rear, Spyder Cars racing harnesses were fitted in 2023.
Beneath its fibreglass body, this Elan +2 has a galvanised chassis and adjustable suspension, and an Omex ignition control ECU for its twin-cam engine. The seller states they purchased the car in 2023, when it had recently benefitted from a complete rebuild that had begun in 2019, and that it has been kept in a garage since then.
Past work includes a fully rebuilt engine and gearbox and new starter motor, suspension wishbones, brakes, radiator and electric fan, and stainless steel exhaust. The seller says that the pop-up headlights are now powered by Mazda MX-5 motors.
The seller describes this car as “Amazing to drive....surprisingly comfortable and quiet, until you put your foot down, and handles superbly.” It’s now ready to share its charms with a new keeper.
