The Appeal

With hindsight, it's easy to see why the Porsche 928 was regarded by some marque traditionalists as heresy. Not only did it have a front-mounted engine, but the engine was water cooled – Porsche's first V8, in fact. This was also the company's first fully in-house design, and though it didn't ultimately replace the 911 as planned, it enjoyed an 18-year production run.

The 928GT was a relatively short-lived model compared to some of its stablemates, so this 1989 example has rarity on its side. It's also been the beneficiary of a comprehensive programme of repairs and upgrades since the current owner acquired it in January 2025. Around £20,000 has been spent on everything from aircon/alternator/cam belts to a complete rebuild of the suspension system – springs, shocks and bushes all round.

The previous owner had commissioned a full respray in Porsche Guards Red, and the current owner has augmented this by reupholstering the driver's seat, rebuilding the door cards and roof while restoring the sunroof to fully operational status. There are some non-operational electrical items, including the passenger seat and electric mirrors, but the car is described as otherwise being in "very good shape" and "solid underneath".

The current owner reports that a replacement suspension system and a new steering rack ensures the car drives well and pulls strongly, with no issues relating to the five-speed manual gearbox. The ECU has been remapped, the power steering belt and cam belt have been replaced, and a quartet of Pirelli P7 tyres has been fitted to ensure this car handles as Porsche originally intended.
