The Appeal
The 306 GTi-6 is repeatedly rated as one of, if not the, best hot hatches of the 1990s. Balanced, engaging and just quick enough, it is easily the equal of the earlier 205. But, as enthusiasts know, there is a car that is even better, and it’s this one - the Rallye.
Based on the GTi-6 but shedding 65kg thanks to removing superfluous electrical gizmos and sound deadening, the Rallye fits neatly into Peugeot’s amazing lineage of lightened small cars. Just 500 were made available in the UK, of which only 200 were finished in this car’s Cherry Red. With few surviving, here is a chance to buy one and build on the current keeper’s recent mechanical investment.
The vendor has helpfully provided a very long list of recent mechanical recommissioning. The detail is below and in the photos, with the headline items including full service, new cambelt and tensioners, brake and suspension work, four new Yokohama tyres and welding as needed.
The car presents as honest and original. With the recent work done, there is scope to improve the interior and exterior aesthetics. The car comes with the reassurance of a lengthy MOT containing no advisories.
The vendor says:
“The car presents very well for its age and retains the character and originality that make the Rallye so sought after. It is not described as a finished project, as budget and energy have been expended, but as a well-sorted, mechanically recommissioned enthusiast’s example that is ready to be enjoyed.
“A respray is desirable, and the driver's seat is currently being re-trimmed for sale.”
