The Appeal
To this day, a Series One E-Type is worthy of attention. The purity of the original Series 1 design - those gorgeous covered headlamps and slender bumpers - is still widely celebrated as one of the most beautiful cars ever built, with fans ranging from the Hollywood elite to Enzo Ferrari. The 4.2-litre Fixed Head Coupé is particularly prized, with the torquier 4.2-litre straight-six and the much-improved all-synchromesh gearbox that addressed the earlier 3.8's notoriously stubborn transmission. For most of us, it may well be the definitive E-Type.
This left-hand drive example was manufactured at Browns Lane on 27th September 1966 and dispatched new to Jaguar Cars New York just days later. After more than five decades in the United States, it was repatriated to the UK and first registered with the DVLA in June 2018. Crucially, it retains its matching numbers throughout — chassis, engine, body and gearbox — as confirmed by its Jaguar Heritage Trust Certificate.
Finished in the desirable opalescent gunmetal grey over a black hide interior with woollen carpets, the car presents well and benefits from notable recent investment including new chrome-work, a new galvanised fuel tank, and a stainless steel exhaust with polished six-branch manifold.

We don't need to tell you the E-Type is nice to look at, but this one is definitely a step beyond. Presented in an Opalescent gunmetal grey, it's a step outside of the more oft-seen Red livery that's near-synonymous with the car, and for our money, particularly suits those retro-futurist lines and curvy proportions.

Still running as it should, this mechanically standard, matching numbers car really does tick all of the boxes for the purist. The 4.2-litre straight-six is still capable of thrilling on the road, with the all-synchro gearbox loyally married up to it and offering a much-improved experience compared to the original manuals shipped with earlier cars.
