In 1936 BSA had eighteen models lined up in the catalogue, of which six models were new introductions. This was a transitional year because more or less all models were revised but at the end of this year as they had a new designer at BSA, Val Page, who killed off all the vintage look models.
Also known of as the 2. 49 hp Light De Luxe, the B18 had an OHV engine with exposed valve gear and a long stoke of 80 mm to match its 63 mm bore, in common with all 250 cc BSA's up until the late Fifties. The lubrication system is total loss with a Pilgrim pump drawing oil from a 3 1/ 2 pink tank above the gearbox. This is all mated to a four speed hand change gearbox; it was only built in 1936 so is quite a rare machine.
The cycle parts are conventional with a diamond type frame and BSA's girder forks. As it was very much a workers machine it came with a Lucas Magdyno and an 8" lamp. One quirk is the rear brake cable that goes through a hole in the mudguard, in order to get an even pull on the brake.
DSV has an unknown early history only being registered with DVLA in 1984 with S. Hampton of Chilworth, Hampshire being listed as an owner before Alan Roberts of Hampshire bought it in 1991. On the 31 March 2006 Roger Leach of Lewes bought it from Richardson's of Ripley for £2, 500 and then in March 2014 Martin Hammonds of Stockton on Tees SORNed it, before Spinning Wheel of Chesterfield sold it Mark Walker for £4, 500. Our vendor bought it in January 2017, but has realised he is advancing in years and will not ride it again.
