Description
No, it isn’t a Bugatti!
This highly interesting and beautifully styled Austin Seven Racer Special is built on an original Austin 7 chassis from 1930 and reminds one of Amilcars, ERAs, Bugattis and other well-known racers of the prewar era.
After a long period of active use in England at venues such as Silverstone, Donnington and Wiscombe Park it was sold in 1990 and shipped to the USA. Its longtime owner there, Dr. Greg Johnson of California, had it completely restored to its original condition with no expense spared. He then raced it successfully in vintage events at local tracks including Laguna Seca and Monterey.
Its crowning moment of glory so far was when it won first prize in its class at the prestigious Concours d’Elegance at Pebble Beach.
In 2004 a large and respected auction house in America sold it to an enthusiast in Germany who kept it as the racing jewel of his private collection.
In 2017/ 2018 it was lovingly refreshed by a custom workshop specializing in vintage vehicles.
The complete package comprises an extensive assortment of spares for the motor, gearbox and wheels as well as related special parts. The accompanying documentation covers its racing history in addition to motor sport press articles describing this particular car.
The October/ November 1995 issue of Sports Car International and the April/ May 2001 issue of British Car each reported on this fascinating classic racer. A detailed technical description together with photographs from 2012 is also available.
The car is currently on display for sale in my showrooms. Please contact me to arrange a private appointment to view this one of a kind example of British and American racing history.
