This is a Lotus Elan SE Turbo that we’ve just acquired from a good friend / customer of ours.
As you can see, the car is finished in its original Norfolk Mustard coachwork, with immaculate complimentary black / yellow leather interior, and looks splendid.
The car was supplied by SGT of Maidenhead, to its first owner, in 1992, and the original service / handbook details servicing up to 60k miles. Current mileage is 84k. From then on, servicing was completed by yet another enthusiastic owner, and is recorded in great detail on the continuation pages in the service book. I could write a novel here if i listed all of the work that has been completed over the years since, but over and above the usual servicing, the car has benefitted from a comprehensive brake upgrade, full gearbox overhaul, full stainless steel exhaust system, complete clutch, full set of Mille M alloy wheels with Goodyear F1s, Magnecor ht lead set and DIS coil, new alarm / immobiliser, etc, etc.
Just prior to the car being garaged in 2008 due to personal circumstances, It had a major cambelt service and head gasket replacement, and covered only a few hundred summer miles.
Fast forward to a few weeks ago, and we get a call from the owner telling us that it was looking unlikely that he would be returning the car to the road, and would we like to buy it. Now we’ve sold a number of these Lotus Elans over the years, and it’s understandable that they’re now coming into their own as genuine classics. They’re fast, reliable, comfortable, handle superbly, and are increasingly a gilt edged investment. The history file accompanying the car is huge, and also contains an agreed valuation certificate @ £9000.
Disappointingly, this car had recorded accident damage around 17 years ago, but other than a good quality respray in the original colour, we can find little evidence of repairs. Service records also show that the car was in regular use and being maintained / upgraded for many years after the repairs.
We’ve undertaken a light re commissioning of the car over the past week, and this has included fresh oil and fuel, new battery, and general service. This resulted in it flying through a fresh MOT with only very minor advisories.
The car now starts, runs, drives and stops faultlessly. Having said that, we’re selling the car with the strong advice that consumables such as tyres and cambelt should be considered for replacement. The cambelt has only covered hundreds of miles since being renewed, and the tyres look like new, but both are several years old.
In summery, this is a very genuine and well maintained Lotus Elan, and having researched its history, we feel that we’ve priced it WAY below the market price for a car of this quality. The current registration is a personalised plate that will remain with the car (B20 STH), but we can offer E18N SE as an interesting option !
