Description
Land Rover Series 3 SWB Hardtop In very original condition
Petrol 4 cylinder. 1981 With overdrive. Late model example of the series 3
Mileage shows 39, 497 which a few old MOTs as well as the condition would indicate is genuine.
It has a nice specification with a hardtop with side windows, rear bench seats, rear safari door with spare wheel mount, Fairey overdrive and AVM free wheel hubs. 5 previous owners.
The value of this example is its originality. Other examples are available which are on the road but they do not have this one’s genuine condition with nothing modified (other than a Kenlowe fan added) and all the original details still present, such as the way the wiring is still located under the bonnet from the factory and the way the doors slam. It still has the original door rubbers in place in good condition.
It is in very original condition and has not been messed about with. The Bronze green paintwork appears to be the original apart from the nearside front wing, which has been re-sprayed in the past. The only marks to the paintwork are: (i) paint scratches on the n/ side wing as well as (ii) some scratches on the o/ side front wing together with a small indentation. (iii) 1 small indentation in the o/ side rear wing which you see if you catch the light against it. (iv) The n/ side wing has been re-sprayed in the past and has micro blisters. The floor panels in the cab still have paint, together with the rear floor, as can be seen in the pictures. The door tops are the original ones and the front ends have a hole in each side however, they are strong with no wobbling. The glazing is complete and not scratched, and they still have the original window channels and locks. The under seat storage box, which has often rusted away on most series Land Rovers, is still in good condition with its original paint, no doubt helped by carpet and underlay under the tools!
The chassis is very good and has had no welding carried out, with the exception of a small patch to a bulkhead outrigger. It does need both the bulkhead outriggers replacing and a repair to the inside of one corner of the rear cross member however, the rear cross member is not rusted out and therefore does not need replacing, merely repairing to keep it original. The other out-outriggers are fine and there are no holes in the top or bottom of the chassis etc.
It drives very well and feels tight to drive. It has been dry stored since 2003 and driven occasionally from one barn to another over the years. I have just replaced the brake & clutch master cylinders as a result of it being in storage. The seats are original however, the driver’s seat base has been torn and could do with being replaced to make it look its best.
There are not too many original condition Series 3 Land Rovers left like this. This is a particularly straight example, with low mileage and a condition to match. A file contains some older MOT’s together with the fitting instructions for the overdrive as well as the Fairey Winches brochure for the overdrive, stating that it improves speed by 27% and economy by 15%! It even still has the original rear mud flaps with yellow Land Rover lettering.
A pending house move without the benefit of barns means we must sadly let a few things go as we will not have the storage room.
