Model History
The R107 series of SL models was launched in 1971 as a replacement to the previous generation W113 or ‘Pagoda’ models. Originally offered as a 350SL with a 3. 5 Litre V8 engine, the line up was joined by the 450SL in 1973 and the 500SL in 1980. In 1974 a 6-cylinder model was introduced in the form of the 280SL which was superseded by the 300SL in 1985. A 380SL and 420SL were also available during the cars lifetime but it was the 500SL that remained the true top of the range car until the introduction of the R129 in 1989.
This Motor Car
The Mercedes-Benz 500SL for sale at the Classic Motor Hub was delivered new in May 1988 through Callanders Mercedes-Benz in Glasgow. It was specified in Smoke Silver (702) with Medium Red Leather (277) interior. Optional extras included a factory hardtop in matching Smoke Silver, Cruise Control and headlamp wipers.
The SL was a highly desirable car when it was new as it was the only Mercedes-Benz roadster available during its entire production and the economic boom of the late 1980’s meant that demand far outweighed supply, leading to premiums being paid for these cars. As a result, many SL’s changed hands a number of times early on in their lives and this car was no exception, being on its 3rd owner by the end of 1989!
Today the car has only had 7 owners in its 30 year lifetime and covered just 67, 000 miles from new. The car has been looked after beautifully with the comprehensive history file and service book showing that it was serviced every single year until 2009 at which point the most recent owner put the car into storage for the winter and for various reasons, this is where the car stayed until earlier this year when we purchased it. Upon collection the car was taken to our workshop where all the fluids were drained and flushed, a new radiator installed, brand new continental tyres fitted all round, the wheels refurbished and an extensive amount of detailing work was done.
