Everyone loves a Beetle.…… and this 65 year old Bug is like that very cool Uncle in the funky shirt who rocks at family parties!
It's an original right hand drive 1954 oval window, no longer powered by the 36 hp asthmatic original 1. 2 litre, but by a rocking 2. 4 that in 1954, could never have been imagined! This is a VW on steroids.
It has been built with all the right bits. The engine is a high performance 4 cylinder by Bernie Bergmann; 2, 387 cc, 9:5 to 1 compression ratio, hydraulic lifters with dual springs, 1. 25 chrome rockers and external oil cooler. Weber 40 carbs. Transmission is via a high performance speed gearbox from Big Boys Toys. The exhaust is a Custom Speed Parts with single central pipe.
Stopping and steering has been rather changed for the better too; firstly its been lowered with a drop spindle kit, shocks are KYB, brakes are discs all round and it rolls on genuine 15" Fuchs from its cousin, the 911.
Inside is cool red leather, red carpets, all very nicely done and far better than intended in '54. The original dash, dials, knobs and buttons and original radio (no longer used) give a period feel. The steering wheel is a 70's Momo ‘Jackie Stewart’ with Wolfsburg horn button and an EMPI Hurst style trigger shifter replaces the original wand. Big sounds are now supplied via a sophisticated iPaul 4. 300 system installed behind the rear seat.
This Beetle had a fortune spent on it about 10 years ago and it still looks and presents a great picture. The metallic black paint has a deep shine and is holding up well, whilst the brightwork, much of which is original, sets the bodywork off to a tee. It retains the semaphore indicators, very cool! Commissioning something similar would cost an eye watering amount, the engine alone is a good $7, 500. Plus, where would you find an original '54 oval window to start with?
Imagine if the original owner could see it now........ this is a car that would provide great fun and attract attention wherever it goes.
