History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

The Car

This 1993 Defender 90 short wheel base was delivered new to Bossi Enrico Maria of Torino, Italy on the 1/ 03/ 1993. The vehicle later resided on the Sicilian island in southern Italy, and has been owned by total of 4 keepers over its 27 year lifespan. One for the traditionalist. It presents in near factory original specification, with the exception of some tasteful NAS spec inspired modifications, these include freestyle alloy wheels, and a period A frame bulbar. Being finished in Arles Blue with a off-white roof, the vehicle has a real EURO – NAS fusion about it. Hard to put your finger on but it just looks right. Wind back 25 years and this really wouldn’t look out of place, driving round Beverly Hills, or parked on the drive of a home in The Hamptons.

Condition

Exterior

Overall, the bodywork is very good condition. They’re only the lightest of indentations on some of the flat aluminium panels. A slight hairline scratch on the rear offside below the rear quarter window. All the rubber door seals present in good condition, along with light lenses and other exterior furniture, such as grills and vents.

Paint

The Defendant has received re-finish to all the exterior body panels in the original Arles Blue, over recent years. The quality of the finished presents fantastically, with no notable reaction from the aluminium and steel surfaces.

Wheels

The car has a full set of 5 ‘Freestyle wheels that have just been fully refurbished. These are finished by a new matching set of Pirelli Scorpion Road tires.

Interior

The front seats are in good condition, with no rips or tears to the base or upper sections. There is mild wear to the internal cushion, although they don’t feel brand-new in terms of firmness there is still plenty of use in them. The door cards are in good condition along with the door handles, The dashboard presents good condition. There's only one auxiliary dashboard hole that's been made in the centre. The driver and passenger floor mats are new items, however the center transmission tunnel matting has cracks it could either be removed for more utilitarian look or replaced. To the rear is a single side bench seat in grey vinyl along with a new rubber cargo liner.

Steering wheel

The car features the original two spoke TDI steering wheel. It does have wear to the top edge. I’s entirely usable however could be trimmed in a vinyl or leather or replaced for a new version.

Mechanical

Engine

The engine is a factory 200Tdi 11L model. They were produced from 1991-1994 and although the 300 TDI is more refined, and a advance iteration, It actually carries less power than the 200 TDI. Making a 200 TDI a really great model that shouldn't be overlooked. Servicing and maintenance is very similar to the 300TDI. The 200 TDI was also extensively used, Not only on the Defender but in the Range Rover Classic and Discovery range. Thus making knowledge, expertise and parts redly available. This one is running great with plenty of lowdown torque, and no black smoke on high exaggeration.

Gear Box

The LT77 Gearbox runs and shifts easily, with high and low diff locks working fine. All the synchromeshs including reverse are crunch free.

Structural

Structurally the vehicle is excellent having remained in southern Italy, for the past 27 years the frame, bulkhead and steel foot well sections present excellently. The vehicle has recently benefited from a new rear crossmember, as the previous one was showing signs of age across the outer edge. This combined with new mudflaps really finishes off vehicle well.

Maintenance Overview

The vehicle has recently benefited from the above-mentioned replacement rear crossmember, along with a replacement hob bearing on the rear axle. While this was carried out replacement shoes on the rear drums were installed along with adjusting the handbrake. The vehicle will be sold with a engine fluid change to include coolant, engine and transmission oil.

Documentation

The car is accompanied with its original the Italian Targa, this document previous owner details and annual technical revisions, within the booklet our technical revision stamps dating from 1997 up until early 2020. Alongside this is the public register notice of termination of circulation, confirming the vehicle has been de-registered from Italy and ready for registration in buyers' chosen country, either EU or other.
