A BIT OF HISTORY.
The R Series is a passenger car built by Bentley from 1952 to 1955. It was the second model produced by the British car manufacturer after World War II, and it replaced the Mark VI.
The "R Series" sedan
During the development of the project the car was called Bentley Mark VII and this name remained for some series of chassis. However, the name R Series remained for the RT series frames. The sedan's front end was identical to the Mark VI, but the tank was nearly double, and the engine was increased from 4. 25 liters of displacement to 4. 5 liters. Fewer and fewer cars were completed by trusted customer body builders. In fact, at the time Bentley, and many other car manufacturers that sold luxury cars, distributed the bare chassis, that is, without the bodywork that was assembled by trusted customer body builders. All the R Series models were fitted with a six-cylinder in-line engine with a cast iron block and aluminum alloy head; they had installed two SU H6 carburettors. It had a displacement of 4, 566 cm, a 92. 08 mm bore and a stroke of 114. 3 mm. The gearbox was four-speed with manual transmission as standard and, for cars produced later, an automatic gearbox as an option.
The suspensions on the front were independent wheels with coil springs, with an integrated rear axle with semi-elliptical leaf springs. The braking system was a drum on the four wheels, mechanically operated on the front axle and by power brakes on the rear wheels.
A four-door sedan version with automatic transmission was tested by The Motor magazine in 1953. It reached a top speed of 163. 7 km / h and accelerated from 0 to 97 km / h in 13. 2
