Hexagon Classics are delighted to offer this Mercedes-Benz 300SL disc brake-model, which is surely one of the finest examples on offer today. Presented in its original colour scheme was originally delivered new in June 1961.
It has been the cover star of countless classic car magazines, national newspapers, successfully competed at Mercedes-Benz concours, been the promotional car for Mercedes-Benz World and used as the parade car for Sir Stirling Moss at Goodwood Festival. Just 250 examples of the improved disc brake version were manufactured in 1961.
In most cases, a road car comes first, and a racing version follows. But for the Mercedes-Benz 300SL, the radical-gull-wing door coupe that hit the market in 1954 was directly derived from the sports racing car that won the Carrera Panamericana and the 24 hours of Le Mans in 1952. The road car that followed retained the racing version’s, strong tubular frame with high sills- necessitating the gull wing doors - and featured fully independent suspension and a fuel-injected version of Mercedes-Benz’s 2, 995cc single-overhead camshaft engine.
This 300SL Roadster has been looked after by Britain’s best-known Mercedes-Benz experts, and the large history file reads like a Who’s Who of the classic Mercedes-Benz scene. Complete with its original leather handbook cover, data card, dating letter and original tools. The car also has its original MOT certificates, road fund discs and has a period cherished registration plate. The Roadster is completed with a brand-new set of matching fitted leather luggage, making it ideal for touring trips.
