The A35 replaced the A30 in 1956 with various styling upgrades including a larger rear window, taller gear ratios and substantially improved performance from the new 948cc version of the “A” series engine. Nearly 300, 000 saloons, vans, estates and pick-ups were built but just 28, 000 four door saloons, making them quite rare.
This car is a 1959 Austin A35 four-door saloon in Speedwell Blue. The mileage is correct at just 53, 000 from new and it has always been in long term ownership. It’s well known to us because we sold it back in August 2010 and knew the car (and its owner at the time) for several years before that date. Its last owner covered very few miles and used it only for trips around the local village – he passed away recently and it has come back to us as a bereavement sale. It was comprehensively restored in the 90’s, including a bare shell re-paint and went on to win various shows including its class at the A35 Nationals in 2005.
We have just treated it to a comprehensive re-commissioning including engine service, overhaul of the front brakes, new battery, various detail and cosmetic jobs and several test miles. It is running and driving perfectly, the “A” series is quiet and smooth, the gear-change is precise and it has the feel of a genuine low mileage car. The body is also in superb order, 25 years after restoration as it has lead a pampered life in that time – it’s not quite up to “Concours” standards but with a little further detailing it would certainly be good enough to compete for cups at the local show!
Completing the picture is a comprehensive history with various original manuals and documentation, details of various show wins and a box of new and used spares – some quite rare. The registered number, ”WCG 421” is original to the car and transferable although it would be a shame to separate it after 63 years!
