SUMMARY
Supplied new by Cecil & Larter Volvo , Bury St Edmunds, this Volvo XC70 has had just three previous keepers, the last was an 80 year old local lady who used the car to drive to her holiday home in Scotland, however due her advancing years, although she was still a very competent driver, her family though it better for her to downsize to something a little smaller. The car has now covered a 101, 500 miles, which is actually quite low for one of these; if you’ve looked what’s on offer, you’ll soon realise it’s not at all uncommon to see XC70’s that have covered double this mileage and are still going strong, These are very durable cars and capable of very high mileages if looked after.
In the six months this car has been with me, I’ve actually become quite fond of it, and can clearly see why XC70’s owners rave about these cars; it has a superb on demand four wheel drive system, they’re great to drive, extremely comfortable, impressively quick yet equally economical to run, and in true Volvo tradition, it’s a capacious estate car that will swallow gargantuan loads with ease.
It goes without saying that this is a very well maintained vehicle, and its three previous owners have all been equally sympathetic, observing the correct maintenance schedules. Due to the very nature of the model, there are lots of very neglected XC70 out there which. This isn’t one of those, however sixteen years in the trade has taught me all cars need at some work, on some cars its not worth doing, but in some cases it absolutely is, and the latter very much applied to this car.
The bodywork is in great condition, but the very nature of the way these cars are used, means there a few very minor marks here and there consummate with use, however non detract from the overall good looks of the car, and more importantly there’s no visible rust. The underside has just been professionally Dinitrol treated, to protect from under body corrosion.
Interior is in superb order with only minimal wear; the seats in Volvos have to be the best in the business and are so comfortable you could sit in them for hours, without the need to shuffle around. Everything works as it should, including the air conditioning that can cool the interior of the car to temperatures similar to that of a Scandinavian winter, or at least it feels like that on a hot summer day. Just a note to my Mercedes customers here, as nice as these cars are, unlike a Mercedes, the XC70 does suffer from the odd trim rattle, but nothing that would drive you mad, unless you were particularly sensitive to that type of noise.
So, if you’re looking for something that’s big, fast and economical, that’s as happy on the motorway as it is in a muddy field, and will still stand out from the crowd (in a good way) look no further. I’ll quite miss this car when its gone, and its highly probable I’ll buy another at some stage in the future as theXC70 is quite a unique vehicle in many ways.
MTSV CLASSIC MERCEDES
MTSV (an abbreviation for Mark Taylor Specialist Vehicles) was born out an incurable and lifelong obsession for anything with four wheels on it, especially those carrying the legendary Three Pointed Star. Established by me, Mark Taylor in November 2005 when the Classic Car market was in its infancy and long before “everyman and his dog” had jumped on the Classic Car bandwagon. Specialising in Classic Mercedes from the late 1970’s, through to the 2000’s, I also frequently have the odd foray into other quality classics and sometimes even modern cars, however the qualification is always that it has to be interesting, and/ or just a little different; my theory, which has served me well so far, is that if I like it, someone else probably will!
My main specialisation is the legendary Mercedes W201 190 and Mercedes W124; I firmly believe these models were about as good as cars got in terms of sheer, teutonic quality, and believe them to be the best cars Mercedes have ever made. I’ve built up a substantial knowledge of both the W201 190 & W124 over many years, which I’m always happy to share, and have recently contributed to a W201 buying guide written by Julian Parish. I also have extensive experience of the most of the Mercedes models within my “band of interest” namely the W116, W123, W202 & W203 C-Class, W208 & W209 CLK, W210 & W211 E-Class, W126 & W140 S-Class, R170 & R171 SLK and the R129 SL-Class. Obviously as time goes on later models are coming onto my radar too.
MTSV has always, and will always focus on quality rather than quantity, and in doing so has earned, and continues to maintain an enviable reputation among its many customers both in the UK and abroad, many who are now three, four and even five times repeat customers, some of which have become good friends too. I’m also listed in the Mercedes Club Directory as a recommended business and I’ve also had several of my rarer cars featured in the motoring press too.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have.
