I delighted to introduce you to "betsy", a beautiful splitscreen camper , born on the 25th january 1966, as a rhd microbus, spec'd with the standard uk export package & ready for conversion, so the option of no middle or rear seats in the back. She headed straight to the canterbury pitt factory in south ockendon, essex to have one of their extremely clever and versatile camper conversions installed by their master craftsman, fashioned in english oak. She was then first registered on 19th april 1966 , purchased brand new the lucky 1st owner adored their new camper & travelled as far as morocco in it. She's only had 7 previous owners in her 56 years, one of which was a committee member of the split screen van club , "david & shirley whitfield".
there's a fantastic history file with "betsy", including the magazine she was featured in which includes a double page centre spread. There's many old photos depicting her full bare metal restoration in 1992/ 93 & it was at this time she received her distinctive ivory over agarve green paint scheme, keeping with period shades , with a slight personal twist. The front seats, door cards & interior panels were all reupholstered in light grey stitch pleat to compliment the soft exterior pastel shades. Jail bars & a new steering wheel with wolfsburg horn push were also added, together with a 12v upgrade. The curtains, cushions & upholstery were also redone, together with a new headlining, so a real top to bottom restoration carried out to a very high standard.
the original interior was cleaned & re-polished and is just as it left the factory. As many people know the canterbury pitt camping interior is very versatile, so the two section front bench seat can be laid out in 3 different arrangements , including seating under the windows, or a single seat with double, twin or single bed arrangements. You have a removable table, twin wardrobes and plenty of storage space. Open the side doors to reveal a fold down gas hob and you even have a sink.
the current custodian jenny pink, has owned "betsy" since 2009 after searching for quit. Some time for a rhd splitty that hadn't been modified and still carrying the original classic charm that jenny had fallen in love with many years before. Whilst living in oregon, usa, in her early 20's, her friend betsy (hence the campers name), owned a lhd splitty & they travelled all over in it.
jenny found this lovely bus & it joined her 1968 beetle in her garage, she & her family have absolutely loved the bus , caring and maintaining her throughout their ownership. Jenny had a brand new mexican 1600 vw engine fitted in 2010 & also added hazard lights, reversing lights and a 12v cigarette lighter socket, which comes in handy for a sat nav or charging your phone. Disc brakes on the front were also added for extra safety.
after many happy years living and loving "betsy", jenny has made the difficult decision to allow somebody else to take over the care of her beautiful camper so , she has asked me to help to find a new owner. A rare chance to find such an original rhd camper in very nice , well cared for condition, on the market for £34, 500. I can honestly say after trading in air cooled Volkswagens for over 20 years, I've sold literarily hundreds of splitscreens and this is without exception the best driving example I've ever experienced.
