The CJ7 has reached iconic status in the States but quite a rare beast in the UK especially in RHD spec. These were sold only as Manual 4 speed, straight six engined versions.
Mine is a 1983 4. 2, RHD UK supplied car in Copper Brown Metallic with a rust free super strong chassis.
I purchased an unmolested CJ7 it in Feb 2019 as a work in progress restoration that had ground to a halt but it was MOT’d and had a new Bestop Hood & frame, , several new expensive parts, like, Carb, water pump, battery, alternator, petrol tank, body mounting rubbers., so thought it wouldn’t take too much to sort it out as it was after all a sub 40k miles vehicle with all the old MOTs. to prove it.
Well, long story short, the brakes and steering turned out to be far from OK & I decided to use a trusted Jeep Specialist that had looked after my Wrangler with the job.
Some time later & £4, 700- lighter, everything had been replaced or repaired, the list includes, master cylinder, Calipers, discs, shoes, wheel cylinders, flexible pipes, steel pipes, a very expensive proportional balancing valve, King pins, track rod ends, various bushes and an assortment of miscelaneous parts.
With the Jeep now driving better but an ever growing list of things to do I set about getting them done over the next couple of years.
I have an A4 box of invoices and every MOT but suffice to say a great deal has been spent culminating in a full professional respray in its original colour which matches the unpainted interior.
Briefly after a full service, I replaced all the tyres with the correct BF Goodrich ones, fitted 4 original s/ absorbers, new steering damper, new h/ brake cables (3), a new correct alternator, replaced the indicator stalk, headlight switch, several bits of trim , the list goes on.
Also the steering was fully aligned and improved with a brace that I imported from the states and had professionally modified for RHD fitment!
Its a lot of fun, not the fastest, but a super smooth engine,, quite a harsh ride as it sits on cart springs but usable in the winter and unbeatable in the summer.
