Subaru released the limited edition RB5 in 1999 to celebrate the late Richard Burns joining the Subaru rally team. Only 444 of these iconic cars were made. They went up to 449, as 13/ 113/ 213/ 313/ 413 were not produced. This owners is #363, and has matching rugs to highlight this, along with the standard dash plaque.
This RB5 was bought by our owner in c2014 in fairly good condition, or so he thought. After about 18 months of use, he thought he would take her to ScoobySport in Derbyshire for a tune up. This turned into a £5k+ full engine rebuild with a bigger turbo and now a healthy 340+ bhp. This also included a lovely ScoobySport exhaust.
The previous exhaust masked the glorious boxer rumble, but it now sounds original, but with a little extra raspiness.
As if that was not enough, he took her back the next year for what he hoped to be some remedial paintwork, as the rear arches were going on both sides, a common problem with these cars. They found that the sills were in a poor state, so the wallet was opened again and £9, 000 later, he had a complete bare metal respray, most panels replaced, any welding done to a high standard and the arches replaced with fibreglass to stop the problem coming back. Little touches like the correct primer-esque finish to the inside of the boot and bonnet were recommended by ScoobySport along with the genuine Prodrive spoiler and removal of the aftermarket gauges inside. The wheels were also refurbished, but if we are being picky, which we are they will need doing again soon.
He has done less than 7k since all this work was done and has kept her in store and in our maintenance washing care for many of them so she will be good for many years to come.
The owner is sorry to see this car go, as it is probably the longest he has ever owned a car, but he has his sights set on a Nissan GTR and can’t justify having both in his collection.
A fellow enthusiast buyer would his and our preference to take ownership, as she has been adored, with over £14k spent.
