1974 Mercedes-Benz 280CE
This ’74 280CE is a ‘barn-find’ that has been tucked away in a garage for many years and is a perfect basis to restore one of these beautiful cars.
UK-supplied and right-hand drive, this top of the range 280CE is finished in its original colour of Horizon Blue with a navy MB Tex interior. It has the usual automatic gearbox and manual windows. First registered in November 1974.
Designed by Paul Bracq, the W114/ 115 was classic Mercedes elegance in stye and the workaday saloon sold over 1. 8 million worldwide. By contrast the coupé, launched a year later in 1969, was an expensive, luxury symbol of success. Only available with six-cylinder petrol engines, just 67, 048 were sold across the globe. In the UK its high price tag meant its elegant pillar-less lines were rarely seen.
The body, while obviously requiring restoration, is very solid underneath with good floors and sills. The wings appear to have been replaced in the past and are good. All the chrome and bright work is complete.
As the pictures show the interior is generally in very good order and completely original, right down to the Blaupunkt stereo.
Given the amount of time it has been off the road we have not attempted to start it however the engine turns and we are given to believe that the engine was last run seven years ago and was in good condition.
HPI clear and comes with a V5 and keys.
In summary, if you’re looking for Mercedes coupé of the stacked headlamp, chrome bumper era to restore, you would be hard-pushed to find a better candidate than this 280CE.
