MODEL A Production : Introduced in 1928, the Model A propelled Ford away from the humble Model T past. The Model A was thoroughly modern, and the buying public responded enthusiastically to the car’s styling and engineering advances. Ford sold more than 5 million units by 1931 (14, 516 in the UK), and the Model A became a landmark in American automotive history. With a 3-speed crash gearbox, Ford had now abandoned the Model T’s epicyclic transmission. A strong and reliable car, the Model A was first built for Britain in Cork and also Trafford Park, Manchester, since the vast Dagenham plant in Essex was not opened until October 1st 1931, as Model A production was ending. The smaller bore but same stroke 14. 9hp AF variant was a tax dodging model on offer in the UK which saved motorists on the high horsepower tax and outsold the 3. 3-litre version - the subject of the Model A on offer for sale here.

MODEL A Factory Specification : Dry multi-disc clutch, in-unit 3-speed gearbox, torque tube, front and rear transverse semi-elliptic springs, four wheel brakes. With a bore of 98. 4mm the stroke of the 24hp 3. 3 litre was 108mm, giving 40bhp in standard form at 2200rpm. The smaller engined 14. 9hp AF version of 2041cc had a bore of 77. 59mm and same stroke of 108mm, giving 28bhp at 2, 600rpm – easy to engineer for UK tax-saving assembly. 8’8” wheelbase, 13’9” in length, 5’7” width, 22 ¼ cwt, 4’8” track. 4. 11:1 final drive. Max speed listed at 60mph.
