EXTERIOR
Thanks to Baur – this was the car BMW never knew they needed to create in period and was such a success that each and every model thereafter featured a factory cabriolet. The E21 has always been an eminently pretty car with clean and smooth coach lines offset by the dynamic step nose and twin kidney grille.
The car has just recently returned from a professional cosmetic refresh and the delightful Schwarz paintwork gleams consistently throughout. Chrome work around the car also presents in excellent condition and makes for an elegant contrast to the black bodywork.
Furthermore, the Baur top has not long been re-trimmed and now presents in perfect condition. A pristine black cover protects the hood when folded down, while the targa roof panel can be neatly slid inside the boot when not in use.
INTERIOR
The E21 interior is wonderful in it’s simplicity with the signature wrap around dash illustrating a triumph of form and function.
The cabin space is in fantastic condition thanks to considerable investment in new upholstery sourced in 2020. As such, the Vinyl seats still presents with a matte effect throughout and exhibits original contour and shape with no discernible blemishes. The dash top, vinyl door panels and textured carpets are extremely clean and are free from any marks or discolouration. In the boot area you will find an unmarked carpet covering the 13-inch Alpina spare wheel and original jack.
The model specific targa top hood has been retrimmed in matching black mohair, with various seals and rubbers replaced to ensure factory fit and finish.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
The M10 engine has been well looked after throughout the car’s life with various works to ignition, fuel and cooling systems ensuring this robust 4 cylinder operates as it should. The peppy little 1. 6 idles up to temperature nicely and performs well after a full service less than 500 miles ago in May of 2022. The under-bonnet area is also really clean and tidy with no structural corrosion to either the chassis rails or inner arches.
The drivetrain has also been carefully attended to with clutch master cylinder recently replaced.
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
The Alpina wheels finished with the correct grey centres and chrome BMW caps are as new having been replaced in 2020, wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato rubber with plenty of tread depth remaining.
The braking system has been overhauled with both rear wheel cylinders replaced just 1, 000 miles ago.
HISTORY FILE
This beautiful Baur was first sold by Cound BMW of Gloucester on New Year’s day of 1979.
Having covered a majority of it’s mileage in the early years of it’s life, this E21 has a sizeable history folder featuring a plethora of service invoices and MOT certificates dating back to 1990. Latterly the car has been looked after by local specialist Mark McLennan of MJF Engineering with a new clutch master cylinder, rocker cover gasket and fuel pump installed alongside routine servicing and inspections over the years.
In 2021 over £3k was spent with renowned restoration specialists – Southern Classics – who would prepare the car to the highest standard. As such the car sits in wonderful cosmetic and mechanical condition.
The original owners book is present alongside a recently confirmed BMW Classic certificate. The bulging history folder includes some noteworthy original literature including both press release and brochures of the Baur – Top Cabriolet, BMW E21 fold out brochure and E21 colour and upholstery chart.
