Louis Bardon established SA Automobiles et Traction (systèm Bardon) at Puteaux, Seine, in 1899. Similar to the engines of Gobron-Brillié, Bardon’s powerplants were of the opposed-piston type, with two pistons sharing a common cylinder & 1 spark plug. Contrary to Gobron-Brillié practice, however, Bardon used two crankshafts, each with its own flywheel. Geared together at a layshaft, they propelled the car through a sliding-gear transmission and double chain final drive. Bardon merged with Gaillarder, builder of the Doctoresse car, in 1901, and some Bardon cars were built in Gaillarder’s factory. Production of Bardon cars ceased in 1903, and not long after, Georges Richard took over the premises to build Unic cars.
This car has run London to Brighton on a good number of occasions & been a regular finisher. It comes to us from circa 45 years of current onwership passed from father to son whom is now looking to pass the car on to a new custodian due to advancing years.
The car will be sold serviced running & ready to to the London to Brighton run. It comes from a collection of very original cars which are run in oily rag condition every year with the concept of cleaning them being complete anathema to the current owner. Aside from the re-covered seats the car is in remarkably original & untouched condition having been previously purchased 45 years ago from a dutch museum.
The engine is uncannily smooth by veteran standards due to the unusal arrangement of opposed pistons operating in the same cylinder in mirrored symmetry. The car has seating for multiple passengers & has plenty of go being able to easily climb hills en route to Brighton.
We will be disinterring the car from its current garage once spring has sprung & the weather improved at which time we will photograph it properly & also shoot a running & driving video. Please note that contrary to its oily rag appearance this is actually a well maintained, good runniing & well serviced early car. It should be noted that the last one to sell in over restored garage queen condition sold for Euros 95, 200 at auction in 2016.
