The birth of the Spiaggina-type cars takes place in the immediate post-war period thanks to the creativity of some Italian coachbuilders who transformed mass-production utility cars in order to make them suitable for the needs of some wealthy customers, who used them in fashionable seaside resorts.
Generally the changes were made on the instructions of the customer and were the most varied. Usually they included the removal of the roof and its replacement with a curtained cotton awning, the installation of canvas or wicker seats and the elimination of the side and rear glass surfaces, as well as the access hatches.
The name "Spiaggina" derives from one of the first cars of this type, the 1958 Savio Spiaggina, built on a Fiat Nuova 500 platform and mechanics and designed by Mario Boano.
The car, despite having been produced in only two specimens, immediately became famous in magazines all over the world for being photographed with its owners, Gianni Agnelli and Aristotle Onassis.
Probably, the reference to the folding beach chairs used in bathing establishments also contributed to the emergence of the term, given that at the time of their presentation, journalists compared this type of car to "beach furniture".
From the second half of the 1950s until the 1990s, the Spiaggine were built in small series by the main Italian coachbuilders, including the Moretti coachbuilder of Turin which, after the successes of the 127 and 126 Midimaxi, created the only integral: the Moretti Panda Rock, produced until December 1989.
