A rare survivor and the best example the vendor has ever seen

Ford unveiled its executive-sized Granada in 1972 as a replacement for the Zephyr and Zodiac line as well as the German P7 series of cars. Good looking, solidly-built workhorses, they quickly found favour with company fleet managers and the public at large, as well as police forces and taxi companies. The MkII version of 1977 brought sharper-edged styling and a switch from UK to German-built engines for the more powerful versions. The model was available as a two-door or four-door Saloon or five-door Estate and buyers could choose from nine engine options and an array of trim packages.

Finished in Paris Blue with a Grey Connolly leather, the X Executive features the 2. 8 injection engine. With a low number of owners, 4 previous owners prior to the vendor, the car was originally supplied by Endeavour Ford in Brighton on 12th November 1984 to Mr M Shoesmith. It later passed into the ownership of Granada Owner’s Club members Jason Blackford and Manny Gill. We believe that Mr Blackford doted on the Granada around this time, including a ‘bare metal’ repaint at the Ford main dealer, Malcolm Waite Ltd. In 2014 (with all the trim removed), Mr Blackford also had the alloys refurbished in 2018 and took care of service items etc., like the exhaust.

Displaying some 98, 800 miles, there is an extensive service history up to 10 years old at 67, 241 miles before there is a gap before recorded servicing at 93, 120 miles in 2011 then 95, 430 miles in 2015. With the current vendor, the car has had a further service recently, which included and oil, air and fuel filter, wiper blades, a new battery, plugs, brake fluid change, a gearbox service, anti-freeze abd has also benefitted from a new exhaust manifold, new ignition coil, replacement steering rack (2nd hand), replacement trip computer (2nd hand), repair internal boot release, and a replacement boot seal (2nd hand). The tappets have been reset, rocker gaskets, and the tracking done in order to get right.

The model variant possessed features such as a rear spoiler, driving lights, the sunroof with a deflector, additionally. Inside, it has a Granada Club dashboard cover, genuine Ford Granada front rubber mats, a working torch key plus 2 spare non-torch keys . The in-car entertainment is a Panasonic Radio CD, not the Ford ECU1 radio/ cassette, and it has the 4-way speaker joystick that still works. The leather is described by the vendor as “with a few little cracks…. so the choice is ‘patina’ or ‘re-connolising’”.

The vendor says:

“The 4 electric windows, electric sunroof and electric seats work. The stereo/ air-con/ heater/ trip computer all work. All the other controls work. All the interior lights work bar the sun visor and one rear one. The electric mirrors don’t work electrically so that needs doing. Under that Granada dash cover there are a couple of cracks in the top of the dash as appears to be standard on nearly every 80’s Ford’s. Oh, the air-con works perfectly and is re-gassed, so it’s ice cold. I’m really, really fussy and like everything to work on old cars as best I can. It’s an extremely nice car, I won't say the best in the world as I haven't seen everybody else’s but it’s the best one I’ve ever seen since sitting in a brand new one at the 1984 Motor Show. I had to make a decision whether to keep it stashed as part of a bigger collection or sell now it’s running right to someone who will go to the Granada events/ motor shows etc with it and most of all use it regularly.”

The Granada is 40 years old next year so it will shortly be eligible for Historic status (road tax and MOT exempt). With an MOT until August of 2024, it is accompanied by the original service book, handbook and a trip computer book and current V5c document.
